Spectaculo

Today, I tore down the Lux Locus Spectaculo show in Ipswich Town Hall. This is the last show that I will have curated during my 3 years at UCS. The next two shows, although billed as student shows will not necessarily be under my guidance, despite being a member of the curation team. Most importantly however is the fact that in the next few weeks I, and my fellow curators, despite not having any input as to where we hang, will have to totally re-plan the Ipswich show owing to a flood in one of our designated spaces.

I am OK with this but I do not think many of my compatriots really understand how much effort has gone in so far. That said, being flexible and agile and re-planning is just an aspect of the real world experience that I have tried to bring to my 3 years at UCS. It is just as well that most of my own work is on track that will allow me to put even more time into this set of degree shows. The one single thing though that has irritated me throughout is the lack of transparency in financial contributions to these shows. We all have to justify our input in terms of effort but without some people paying and contributing  some 17 times more than some some contributions we would not have Free Range. Honours students are not children and should not be treated as such.

On a really plus note , curating other artists work has been one of the most beneficial aspects of my studies. It has been a privilege. It has alsobeen a privilege to see other students with the get up and go taking over one’s batons. That is education in practical terms.
