Place and Placement

Beach hut flood gate
Well now, I was recharging spiritual batteries in Southwold yesterday as at least they are batteries that I can recharge unlike the replacements for my recently stolen ones that are proving difficult to obtain. Enough of that.

I took a leisurely stroll along the promenade towards the pier whilst Mrs O was learning all about Land Rovers from Ben Fogle at “Ways with Words” and I was amazed at how different this end of town was compared to Friday morning when it was an absolute desert devoid of bipeds in the main. I was more interested then in all the signage along the landward side of the car park, noting that Parr was nowhere to be seen and his famous tea hut closed up for the season. I had noted all the ‘parked’ beach huts but they were not on my short distance radar for the day as I was focussed on walking past Easton Bavants to investigate tide lines and debris.

I saw the light however on Sunday afternoon and wondered about the thought processes that led the workmen placing these hibernating huts behind the relative safety of the sea wall to select and place Noah’s Ark next to a floodgate that was next to a bottle bank.

All biblical references in a way and a little bit spiritual. I felt like the curtains had begun to open again.

Talking of spiritual, I am always fascinated by the appearance of sunrises but also of moonrises and with all the hullabaloo over the ‘super moon’, I was best placed (with nothing between me and Northern Europe) to try and grab a shot or two. This one adds a bit of context as I had worked out at which point the moon would rise over the horizon only for that to be obfuscated for the first 20 minutes by the distant rain sodden clouds that were being blown towards our European cousins and erstwhile historical invaders. I was not let down by the wait for the light to finally arrive but I have to say I have seen bigger presentations of the moon but nearly always when I have not been able to photograph it.

I’ll get around to analysing my tideline finds over the next few days.
