Short-listings and heroes

Phew! What a week this has been.

Monday afternoon was a treat but Tuesday was a planned gallery day. Three ‘old codger’ photographers trained it into the smoke and headed for the Photographers Gallery for two exhibitions  ‘Made you look: Dandyism and Black Masculinity’ and ‘Terence Donovan: Speed of Light’., then it was off to Eggleston at the NPG, where being ‘old codgers’ we got in at a discounted rate.

I wanted to see the trike but this was the NPG so no trikes. If anything, Donovan had the edge for me then it was nosebag in Chandos. Now I’ve never been in there in daylight before and never has it been so empty but steak and ale pie, pie is always a good choice, and washed down with Sam Smiths – perfect.

Then it was yomp to New Tate Modern but we only went in the old bit and were pleasantly surprised at the finding the Bechers – now that was a treat but the Coal Bunkers typology I last saw in Tate Britain is still shite in my view – so poorly presented. The doubled wheeled winders were by far the best display of their craft.

No trip around the galleries is complete without taking in the street art around Brick Lane but boy we must have had ‘grockle’ written all over us. Never, and I have trodden Brick Lane many times, have I have been pimped so much for a Ruby. All in all a grand day out.

Wednesday took me down to Canterbury and Ashford on business and it was also finalist day for the RPS  IPE159 exhibition. I never made it into the last 100 images but getting shortlisted had been a good thing.

This happens to be one of my personal best images in the series from my medium format edition so I’m looking forward to making more in the same vein. To say I was disheartened by not making the last 100 is an understatement but I ‘m very happy for Adrian Manning and Alastair Bartlett who made it into the final selection.
