Individual Practice – Ten Minutes

So, April came and went with just about every season possible wrapped into 30 days. A birthday passed by in a blur , as did Easter and also a very successful Prettys Primavera art show that I curated plus organising two other exhibitions with two other students . Add to that a dollop or three of assignments and that is why I have been so quiet.

The most frustrating part of April was the lack of rain for me. My current project was spawned from the Fujifilm Student Awards theme ‘ the colour of..’ I entered 5 images for that competition based on yellow forms of control on the street.

The new assignment had to be based on work done previously so I moved ‘Blue’ on to a new plane. Taking inspiration for a routes based study from Ed Ruscha’s Twentysix Gasoline Stations, and the Becher’s work ethic and process, I set about filming the gutters within a ten minute walk of my home.

The shoot was made using a Fujifilm GW670III and Fuji 400H film – 11 rolls were exposed with only 3 rejects from 110 negatives owing to poor focussing. Still not sure how I managed to do that but not a bad hit rate especially with so many being taken at 1/15th  second.

This image is from the 11th roll

I laid out 75 images inthe lab yesterday and two fellow students helped me edit those down to 40. I substituted two of those 40 today for 2 from this last roll.

I now wait for a bookbinder to bind these in a traditional way ready for next Friday. Eamonn McCabe suggested Eddie Ephraums as a person to get books done. I wondered why I knew the name then it dawned on me that I have a number of Andy Rouse’s books, all of which where brought into being by Eddie. Maybe when I have the handmade unique book from Judith Maria Wiesner will I be able to contemplate a run……

I’ll photograph the book and post it here when done, and upload a gallery. Too much research to write up at the moment.
