November – Where has it gone?

I’ve been a tad quiet lately. Quiet but busy. This semester is rapidly approaching its crescendo and what happened this month? Impaled by a pyracantha thorn in the back of my hand during a fire drill resulting in my right hand swelling to double the normal size resulting in a trip to A&E and a course of antibiotics, after which my immune system was ready to be attacked by some influenza like virus. Net result 4 days loss of hand and 7 days constant headaches and daily morphing of this damned virus.

Looking back on the month, although I am now behind with studies, I have been rather busy.

A while back I posted about the sale of a picture ‘Lincolns’ Red’. I had the opportunity to take another picture on 26th October from the same spot. Here it is

OK that was October but this month, I have shot students taking part in sports, the private view of renowned graphic artist Brian Grimwood at his exhibition in the UCS Waterfront building,  such a charming man and so very easy to talk to, Wendy Cope OBE, a delight, and Bettina von Zwehl, an inspiration.

Also visiting UCS this month was Wendy Cope OBE. I never thought poetry could be such fun. Such a sharp wit and eye for detail. I was glad to have been asked to record the event.

And last but not least we had an engaging lecture from Bettina von Zwehl in conversation with her curator, Katy Barron on 28th November. I was not prepared this time for an assignment but always carry a small point and shoot camera. That said, from a professional perspective, I am not happy with the image made but it is a record and I know what I should have done to make a better image but I did not want to resort to the use of on-camera flash, especially after seeing Bettina’s beautifully lit portraits taken by a north facing window in the V&A Museum where she was  artist in residence until recently. Bettina was a delight to listen to and it was indeed a shame to have such lectures limited to 1 hour.

Now, I must get back to finding those extra 500 words to complete an essay on Modernism and Post Modernism, start shooting a de-centered narrative based on exhibition ‘confusion’ and collate workbooks ready for submission 22 days from now.

Looks like December might be another quiet month!
