Fish suppers

Mrs O and I do not often have a fish supper. Mostly, when we both happen to have the same day off and the sun is shining for instance, we might take a trip up the coast to Aldeburgh to scoff fish and chips on the sea wall by the Martello Tower.
Last week we were in Wroxham, right in the middle of a boatyard and close to a couple of chippies. We indulged 3 times in the rather excellent large Haddock that was on offer. That is almost a full annual quota for us. I can remember as child being sent around to our local chippy in Maghull to collect a rare fish supper for us. With six and a half mouths to feed I don’t suspect it was any more expensive then as it is now. Mostly chips were cooked at home. Battered fish had to come from the chippy. Fish finger sandwiches were always available to make at home though but that was breaded and quite different.

Anyway, I missed several opportunities to record Kingfishers stunning and swallowing their fish suppers last week. I really needed a helmsman who was another photographer to get the boat back into position as quickly as possible for me but that would have meant someone else in the boat for a very long time where nothing but looking and seeing was taking place. Very boring for someone else not locked into the same wavelength.

One species that has always attracted me is the Grebe. They always look like they have just come from the hairdressers and seem to to operate in pairs most of the time. Andy Rouse happened to tweet a link to his blog yesterday featuring Grebe. What a coincidence? I admire his skill in wildlife photography and getting the light right. One Grebe provided me with a great opportunity last week as it surfaced with a small Perch in its beak. It was very difficult to try and capture a good image of this bird as it it turned the fish around so that it could be swallowed and I was dodging back and forth to the helm to get the boat spun around to keep track with it but I’m pleased with this shot and it was on the D810. I struggled to get to grips with this last week shooting wildlife as up until now I have mainly used it for landscape work which is what is was bought for anyway. I shot on the D810 with the 70-200 plus 1.7TC all week.
