The female of the species is more reliable

My quest this week for Kingfisher images has not been as fruitful as in other years. I admit I might be two weeks earlier than last year but there is a definite drop in numbers and this was a mild if not warm winter. I don’t know if this is a common statistic across the kingdom.

One thing for sure is that the Coltishall pair are still about but the Belaugh female although evident and the most gracious sitter I had this week did not seem to have a mate. I may have got this wrong, after all one Kingfisher looks very much like another apart from the obvious sex difference in their beaks. The Belaugh female may well be half of the Coltishall pair.

One Kingfisher patrols a territory of 1 Km so the proximity of this hamlet to Coltishall may well be in that range and this might have been her patch before mating.

To the South of the hamlet I happened upon her again albeit in much more difficult circumstances to capture a really good image but this shows how difficult it can be to gain focus through all the crossing over branches.

Again, tight crop to show some detail.
